My parents told me that my name was a split decision between Melissa and Melinda, my dad favored Melinda, but of course Melissa won, hands down. Anyway…I like to be referred as Melissavirgo for the time being!!!

Steak Kebabs

Ingredients : 450 g (1 lb) rump steak, cubed  175 g (6 oz) mushrooms  1 red pepper, diced  1 green pepper, diced  1 small onion, cut into chunks  Oil for brushing  1 tbs Schwartz Steak Simply Shake Seasoning

Preparation :

Thread the steak onto 8 skewers alternating with the vegetables. Brush the kebabs with oil. Place under a pre-heated grill for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally. Evenly sprinkle over the Steak Seasoning and cook for a further 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until cooked. Makes 4 servings.

Hey everyone, I found this on a Father’s Day website a couple of weeks ago, I couldn’t wait to post this, it is incredible!! I want to credit not only the fathers who are there for their own biological children, but the step-fathers, and ANY man who is positively stepping in, influencing a youngster to be the best he/she can be by his OWN example. And of course, much respect to the single Moms, like myself holding it down for the family, puttting herself LAST so that her kids are taken care of.

4 years: My Daddy can do anything!
7 years: My Dad knows a lot…a whole lot.
8 years: My father does not know quite everything.
12 years: Oh well, naturally Father does not know that either.
14 years: Oh, Father? He is hopelessly old-fashioned.

Just want to send a special shout out to my boyfriend, Tony, who raised his girls when they were toddlers singlehandedly. The ex-wife decided she didn’t want to be a wife or mother any longer, so she took off, WOW!!!!

When asked how did he manage, he’d shrug his shoulders and  say, “I was just  being a father to my girls”. Wow, I wish more men out there would step up to the plate and take care of their responsibilities, including MY own children’s dads. ‘Nuff said.

My All-time Favorites!

Today is a super-slow day at work, being that as I mentioned before, my job will be ceasing on July 28th. With that being said, most of the calls in this call center is being re-routed to the Philippines and Florida.

So as I sit here surfing the web as usual, a great idea popped in my head!!! I’d like to post my all-time favorite websites to share with you in no particular order:

2. www.cnn.com I know their journalism can be biased at times, and sometimes the articles they post can be quite un newsworthy, I basically like to look at the comments on the bottom of the page and get a good laugh. My co-workers usually ask what am I snickering about and I tell them, the news.

3. www.eztaxreturn.com I have been using them for the last three to four years since I came to the realization that I too, can do my own taxes instead of paying those ridiculously high fees to have someone do it for me, especially when they are using the very SAME website!!!

4. www.nydailynews.com Having been born and raised in NY(Long Island to be exact), I miss the crazy happenings in the Big Apple.  They also have the moste amusing, but rude comments as well.

I love these  three sites, probably the most!!! I need my daily bread, this is what gets me thru the good AND bad days!!! There’s nothing like being fed the Word when you’re hungry or thirsty, but not for food or drink.

Farewell Marvin Isley (August 18, 1953 – June 6, 2010)

Well friends, another r & b legend has gone on to glory!! Marvin Isley, bass guitarist for the Isley Brothers passed away on June 6, 2010 due to complications of diabetes in Chicago, IL.

He was the youngest memhber of the group, formed in  1954 by the three eldest Isley brothers, O’kelly Jr, Rudolph and Ronald. Marvin  joined in 1973, when the group expanded to 6 members,(3+3), including his brother Ernie and brother-in-law Jasper.

Some of the great songs he played bass guitar include “Fight the Power (Part 1 & 2)“, “I Wanna be With You (Part 1)“, “The Pride, Pt. 1 & 2“, “Don’t Say Goodnight (It’s Time for Love)“, “For the Love of You (Part 1 & 2)“, “Voyage to Atlantis“, and “Between the Sheets“. That is just a few to mention!!!

The 3+3 split in 1984. The three original Isleys kept the name The Isley Brothers and the three that joined later(Marvin, Chris and Ernie) became known as Isley-Jasper-Ispley. Their number one track many may remember was “Caravan of Love“. During their tenure they released three albums before rejoining the original Isley Brothers.

The Isley Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Finally due to severe diabetes, Marvin retired in 1997. Eventually the disease tragically led him to have both legs amputated.

Wow, this is the music I grew up on!! I remember like it was yesterday back in the day when my family came home from church every Sunday, my Dad would pop that 8-track in the player in the  living room and we’d listen to the great sounds of Isley Brothers, Marvin Gay, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Sam Cooke, Aretha, I soo could go on but you get the point!

But yes, thanks Marvin for your contribution to the R & B world, you will be sorely missed, but your music will live on forever.  (PS, if you see my Dad up there, play him a little ‘Voyage to Atlantis’, his favorite! Rest in Peace, Marvin….a job well done.)

Moms….

 A co-worker of mine sent this to me today via email, thought it would brighten someone’s day! This just goes to show that just because it’s quitting time at work, doesn’t mean our shift is over…wow, this sure sounds good enough to me to repost!!! Here goes….

Mom and Dad were watching TV when Mom said, ‘I’m tired, and it’s getting late. I think I’ll go to bed’. She went to the kitchen to make sandwiches for the next day’s lunches. Rinsed out the popcorn bowls, took meat out of the freezer for supper the following evening, checked the cereal box levels, filled the sugar container, put spoons and bowls on the table and started the coffee pot for brewing the next morning.

She then put some wet clothes in the dryer, put a load of clothes into the washer, ironed a shirt and secured a loose button. She picked up the game pieces left on the table, put the phone back on the charger and put the telephone book into the drawer. She watered the plants, emptied a wastebasket and hung up a towel to dry.

 She yawned and stretched and headed for the bedroom. She stopped by the desk, wrote a note to the teacher, counted out some cash for the field trip, and pulled a text book out from hiding under the chair She signed a birthday card for a friend, addressed and stamped the envelope and wrote a quick note for the grocery store. She put both near her purse.

Mom then washed her face with 3 in 1 cleanser, put on her Night solution & age fighting moisturizer, brushed and flossed her teeth and filed her nails. Dad called out, ‘I thought you were going to bed.’ ‘I’m on my way,’ she said. She put some water into the dog’s dish then made sure the doors were locked and the patio light was on. She looked in on each of the kids and turned out their bedside lamps and TV’s, hung up a shirt, threw some dirty socks into the hamper, and had a brief conversation with the one up still doing homework.

In her own room, she set the alarm ; laid out clothing for the next day, straightened up the shoe rack. She added three things to her 6 most important things to do list. She said her prayers, and visualized the accomplishment of her goals….. About that time, Dad turned off the TV and announced to no one in particular. ‘I’m going to bed’ And he did. without another thought.

OK, so it’s Memorial Day(hope everyone is enjoying theirs!!) and I am STUCK at work!! I’ve been here since 8am and hello….it’s 9:23 and I haven’t gotten a call yet!!! So please forgive me for posting so early, I AM BORED!!!

Wow!!! Just think of all the schooling, training and tuition paid for these jobs to make that kind of money!!! I can ONLY imagine what  we mothers would be paid if we actually were rewarded for being a Mom:

Strictly For the Southpaws!!!

Well everyone, as I sit here on this lazy Sunday afternoon, abou to call it a day at work, I wanted to touch on a personal subject, being left handed!! There are about 10-15% lefties in the world. For me personally, I believe I have adjusted well, considering I am the only lefty in my immediate family. Growing up, probably my biggest challenge at home was the ironing board position and the irons my Mom would buy that the cord was accommodating righties. Somehow or another, I managed. Oh, how can I forget about sitting in the desk at school with the writing board on the right!  Maybe out of the Also when my family eats out for dinner, I always sit on the left side, so my elbow doesn’t bump anyone else’s. Believe it or not, I DID play violin and the guitar when I was a kid!!! I just learned just like everyone else right handed. I was offered to have the strings restrung, I refused!! Yeah, playing softball was a b&*#ch in school, of COURSE they had no glove for lefties, now why would they do that lol!!! OK just a thought popped up, I did learn to knit left handed, I think the person who taught me was leftie, I’m not sure, it was soooo long ago!! OK my friends, another thought came to mind, when I was a kid, a girl who I was in a shouting match with, got herself a LITTLE too close to my personal space. Well I remember to the day that I faked like I was gonna hit her with my right but slammed the side of her head with a wicked punch with the left, I definitely used my left-handedness to my advantage, thanks to having to defend myself constantly against two older brothers, wow!!

If you’re not lefty you wouldn’t understand  the challenges we face on a daily basis. Being left handed can sometimes be a drag.  We are more prone to have allergies, migraines, and other environmental illnesses.  Left handed people are three times more likely than right handed people to become alcoholics and scientists speculate that it is because the right hemisphere of the brain has a lower tolerance for alcohol then the left side of the brain Why all the discrimination against lefties? Based on the standards of tradition, the right hand has always been preferred to the left.

Research reveals that people who are left-handed do not use the sequential processing style like their right-handed colleagues, to disseminate information. Instead they are good at applying themselves to multiple tasks with the help of the synthesis method of breaking down information and finding a solution.

Scholarships for Left Handed People
Left-handed people, as the name suggests, use their left hand and leg (i.e. the right hemisphere of the human brain) efficiently. They face many problems in day-to-day life, such as the inability to use certain equipment, and thus need to buy special tools. The only scholarship available for left-handed children is the one offered by Juniata College in Pennsylvania. The ‘Frederick and Mary F Buckley’ Scholarship of $1000 is granted to left-handed students. This scholarship program was started by Mary Francis Buckley in the year 1979 and till date it helped 40 students attend school.

Left-handed students can apply for the scholarship, after which they are screened to verify their left handedness. One might be asked to provide references of people who would confirm the prevalence of left handedness in him. It covers the expenses such as tuition fees and allowances (food, transportation, books, etc.).

Other Scholarships
To obtain scholarships, one should try to earn a respectable GPA. Financial need is the second criteria to judge a person for a scholarship. However, these are only few of the many aspects that govern the necessity to grant a scholarship. Left-handed students/people should focus on, understand and note down the various problems they face. The odds or hurdles encountered in daily life for the reason of being a left-handed person should be portrayed in a manner as to earn maximum leverage in obtaining a scholarship. However, it is also the responsibility of a scholarship seeker to be honest and present only the true problems.

In places around the world, some organizations and institutions do provide grants to cater for left-handed people. The community centers and NGOs could play an instrumental role to help earn scholarships for left handed people. One should however seek benefits for a proper and reasonable thing. A left-handed person should try his best to obtain the necessary benefits for his needs and betterment.

Some Christians believe that when judgement day arrives according to custom God blesses the saved with his right hand and casts out all the sinners out of Heaven with his left hand. Wow, I’ll have to beg to differ on that. I am a true Christian and believe I will be there on the ‘correct’ side when my day comes to meet my Maker. Amen!!

Great Mother’s Day Weekend!!

Well folks, although I DID end up spending last Sunday, Mother’s Day at work, my kids and I did get to spend some quality time together at the airshow last Saturday in Tuscaloosa. I had warned my kids when the construction started earlier this year that by no means was I going to torture myself (and them) with the snarling traffic like we luckily avoided last year when we went.  I knew there were going to be crazy detours this year.

Considering how close I work in proximity to the airport, I could see the Blue Angels practicing in the afternoons during the week prior to the show during my breaks outside. Finally I gave in because I had gotten that same pumped up thrill I got LAST year when the kids and I found out they were coming to town!

So Friday  evening  I allowed one friend of my girls’ to spend the night  over and my oldest daughter spent the night HER friend’s house and I picked them up bright and early the next morning. Including myself, there were 7 of us in tow . We packed a cooler full of food, drinks, and brought a bunch of snacks and headed out around 7:30 a.m. We got a pretty good parking spot near the airport, thank goodness!!

While the kids were off doing their own thing, my little one and I caught up with my boyfriend who had arrived an hour after us. Boy did we  enjoy the show!!! It was spectacular as usual! I especially love the parachute jumpers and of course the BLUE ANGELS!!!  They were the finale, and performed for at least a half hour. The weather was absolutely GORGEOUS, almost if not 90 degress. Wow, it was worth getting my face sunburned(I should have known better it happened last year too)!!

My family and I are looking forward to next year’s airshow already!! Hopefully I can convince some of my family members from out of town to join us next time and we can do something big at the Robert Cardinal Park next door to the airport. As soon as it is confirmed they will be back, my plans WILL be in full effect!!

Nothing Special

Hey everyone, just wanted you to know that my son FINALLY got his laptop back yesterday!!(yah). I mean damn….It was there since March already. Like I said, he bought it in February from this beauty supply store nearby. He had it less than a month when he started encountering problems with it. So he took it back to them. Come to find out, it was the ‘motherboard’ blown. First they tried to get us to pay for repair. Man I almost ripped that guy a new armhole!!!

Every two to 3 weeks we’d stop by there and they’d give one reason after another why it wasn’t ready. So towards the end of April they tell us that they had gotten the wrong motherboard, so finally last week it was ready. I stop by there after work to pick it up and bring it to my son. Well ok, two keys were missing from the keyboard  which he said ‘whatever’ as opposed to them getting it back for another month to fix. But when he discovered they had taken out the usb jack, he was floored. I WAS FLOORED!!!! So, once again back it went!

So like I said, I went by there yesterday to get it because they called a day or two before to notify me it was ready, so come to find out my son had already gotten it. So now, my friends there is peace in the household…sigh!!!

And so I just found out last week that my job of almost four years is being moved to the Philippines(yea ok). So at this point I am looking hard and heavy!!! At least we were given ample notice(the end of July) a lot more than others have been given, thank God. So I have been feverishly looking for work on my downtime, and as a matter of fact, had an interview for another department at work in collections. Wish me luck!!!Well my friends, it’s the weekend, I’m going to enjoy this beautiful weather with my youngns’  this weekend, and I wish u all a great one as well, but let me leave u with this….

  Hello, my friends, I’m back. Work is kinda slow and my co-worker sent me this e-mail that I think you’d find amusing as it sure put a smile on my face…enjoy!! By the way, I added the pics myself for good measure, lol!!

1. I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.

3. I totally take back all those times I didn’t want to nap when I was younger.

4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.

5. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

That’s My Sign!!

Now that I’m getting used to this blogging thing, more ideas are popping in my head daily. Today I want to touch on my zodiac sign, Virgo. As you see, my user name is Melissavirgo because I feel a strong connection to being a Virgo. From the first time I ever even read up on my sign as a teen, I truly believed that it best described me.

Do You Know How To…

Hey guys, a little something that I’ve been thinking about for a while that I’d thought I’d throw at you. While at the library a few weeks ago, my children and I were all on the computers. My 6 yr old (she’ll be 7 tomorrow, go Neva!) happened to be sitting next to me. While usually I concentrate on my own business at hand, I happened to glance over at her screen. Now, normally she’s doing the Nickelodoen thing, playing games or watching videos. Well, imagine my surprise when I looked over at her and saw this young lady on the screen with no shirt on dancing  around with no top on, showing folks how to design your own shirt! She was showing how you cut up the side of the shirt, make horizontal cuts and then tie the strips together so the sides of the shirt has holes!!! While the trend is unfamiliar, as my teenage girls have a few t-shirts of their own like that, I was just taken aback because I’m trying to figure out how the he!! did she happen upon that site and video!! Well, I figured out that part, when she logged on the computer, she must have hit the button to restore last session, so youtube popped up. And apparently she just clicked on any video that had been on the screen, because she surely did NOT type in “How to Design your T-shirt”! Of course I quickly directed her off that page and guided her to Nickelodeon, her familiar territy.

Now I find it amazing though that you can find instructions on ANYYTHING you need to know how to do. I’m talking about from A-Z, folks!! Here are some How to’s that I find amusing if not interesting…
