Strictly For the Southpaws!!!

Well everyone, as I sit here on this lazy Sunday afternoon, abou to call it a day at work, I wanted to touch on a personal subject, being left handed!! There are about 10-15% lefties in the world. For me personally, I believe I have adjusted well, considering I am the only lefty in my immediate family. Growing up, probably my biggest challenge at home was the ironing board position and the irons my Mom would buy that the cord was accommodating righties. Somehow or another, I managed. Oh, how can I forget about sitting in the desk at school with the writing board on the right!  Maybe out of the Also when my family eats out for dinner, I always sit on the left side, so my elbow doesn’t bump anyone else’s. Believe it or not, I DID play violin and the guitar when I was a kid!!! I just learned just like everyone else right handed. I was offered to have the strings restrung, I refused!! Yeah, playing softball was a b&*#ch in school, of COURSE they had no glove for lefties, now why would they do that lol!!! OK just a thought popped up, I did learn to knit left handed, I think the person who taught me was leftie, I’m not sure, it was soooo long ago!! OK my friends, another thought came to mind, when I was a kid, a girl who I was in a shouting match with, got herself a LITTLE too close to my personal space. Well I remember to the day that I faked like I was gonna hit her with my right but slammed the side of her head with a wicked punch with the left, I definitely used my left-handedness to my advantage, thanks to having to defend myself constantly against two older brothers, wow!!

If you’re not lefty you wouldn’t understand  the challenges we face on a daily basis. Being left handed can sometimes be a drag.  We are more prone to have allergies, migraines, and other environmental illnesses.  Left handed people are three times more likely than right handed people to become alcoholics and scientists speculate that it is because the right hemisphere of the brain has a lower tolerance for alcohol then the left side of the brain Why all the discrimination against lefties? Based on the standards of tradition, the right hand has always been preferred to the left.

Here is some info I gathered on the website

Facts About Left-Handed People:

Left-handed people are many a times at a disadvantage using tools designed for the right-handed. Well this is true, but today, there is a whole range of tools and equipment being designed for left-handed people. Many right-handed tools too are available, such that they can be molded to suit the needs of the left-handed craftsman. Even the computer mouse has been challenged in use and the touch pad provides the left-handed professional equal opportunity.

Left-handed people are high achievers. Yes. Research reveals that left-handed people are in fact high achievers. This is because their brains are structured to widen their abilities, an attribute that is genetic and on account of the enhanced governing of ‘language centers’ within the brain. A number of mathematical, artistic and sporting geniuses were and are left-handed.

Left-handedness is usually forced to right-handedness due to cultural impact. Sadly, this is the case across the globe. Many children are forced into right-handedness during the formative years. Cultural pressure is fast changing though due the impact of mass literacy on society.

Left-handed people have a shorter lifespan than right-handed counterparts. Statistics reveal that left-handed people are more likely to succumb to accident fatalities and other injuries that arise out of a state of ‘affliction’. This is mainly due to majority people in the world being right-handed and hence the overall design of utilities being designed to accommodate the majority. Left-Hander Syndrome is a condition that is seen in left-handed people who are forced to write with their right hand; thus causing a mental state of confusion.

Left-handed persons use visual stimulus to process information. Research reveals that people who are left-handed do not use the sequential processing style like their right-handed colleagues, to disseminate information. Instead they are good at applying themselves to multiple tasks with the help of the synthesis method of breaking down information and finding a solution.

But have no fear my fellow southpaws!!! Read on!!

Scholarships for Left Handed People
Left-handed people, as the name suggests, use their left hand and leg (i.e. the right hemisphere of the human brain) efficiently. They face many problems in day-to-day life, such as the inability to use certain equipment, and thus need to buy special tools. The only scholarship available for left-handed children is the one offered by Juniata College in Pennsylvania. The ‘Frederick and Mary F Buckley’ Scholarship of $1000 is granted to left-handed students. This scholarship program was started by Mary Francis Buckley in the year 1979 and till date it helped 40 students attend school.

Frederick and Mary F Buckley Scholarship
Left-handed students can apply for the scholarship, after which they are screened to verify their left handedness. One might be asked to provide references of people who would confirm the prevalence of left handedness in him. Good academic performance and recommendations would help in increasing the chances of receiving the scholarship. The scholarship offered to a student can range from $1000 to $1500. It covers the expenses such as tuition fees and allowances (food, transportation, books, etc.).

Other Scholarships
To obtain scholarships, one should try to earn a respectable GPA. Financial need is the second criteria to judge a person for a scholarship. However, these are only few of the many aspects that govern the necessity to grant a scholarship. Left-handed students/people should focus on, understand and note down the various problems they face. The odds or hurdles encountered in daily life for the reason of being a left-handed person should be portrayed in a manner as to earn maximum leverage in obtaining a scholarship. However, it is also the responsibility of a scholarship seeker to be honest and present only the true problems.

In places around the world, some organizations and institutions do provide grants to cater for left-handed people. The community centers and NGOs could play an instrumental role to help earn scholarships for left handed people. One should however seek benefits for a proper and reasonable thing. A left-handed person should try his best to obtain the necessary benefits for his needs and betterment.

President Obama is left-handed!!

Famous Left-Handed People:

There are a number of famous left-handed people. The list includes:

Presidents of the United States of America: Harry S. Truman, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and the current President Barack Obama.

Legendary personalities: Joan of Arc, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Fidel Castro, Helen Keller.

Musicians and Composers: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Phil Collins, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr.

Artists: Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci.

Actors: Charlie Chaplin, Tom Cruise, Robert DeNiro, Greta Garbo, Whoopie Goldberg, Cary Grant, Angelina Joli, Nicole Kidman, Steve McQueen, Marilyn Monroe.

If you’ve been taught that left-handed people are in some way inferior to right-handed people it’s time to adjust your viewpoint. And if you are a left-handed person who was “trained” to be right-handed feel free to use either hand now. Times have changed. Thank goodness.

Some Christians believe that when judgement day arrives according to custom God blesses the saved with his right hand and casts out all the sinners out of Heaven with his left hand. Wow, I’ll have to beg to differ on that. I am a true Christian and believe I will be there on the ‘correct’ side when my day comes to meet my Maker. Amen!!

Great Mother’s Day Weekend!!

Well folks, although I DID end up spending last Sunday, Mother’s Day at work, my kids and I did get to spend some quality time together at the airshow last Saturday in Tuscaloosa. I had warned my kids when the construction started earlier this year that by no means was I going to torture myself (and them) with the snarling traffic like we luckily avoided last year when we went.  I knew there were going to be crazy detours this year.

Considering how close I work in proximity to the airport, I could see the Blue Angels practicing in the afternoons during the week prior to the show during my breaks outside. Finally I gave in because I had gotten that same pumped up thrill I got LAST year when the kids and I found out they were coming to town!

So Friday  evening  I allowed one friend of my girls’ to spend the night  over and my oldest daughter spent the night HER friend’s house and I picked them up bright and early the next morning. Including myself, there were 7 of us in tow . We packed a cooler full of food, drinks, and brought a bunch of snacks and headed out around 7:30 a.m. We got a pretty good parking spot near the airport, thank goodness!!

While the kids were off doing their own thing, my little one and I caught up with my boyfriend who had arrived an hour after us. Boy did we  enjoy the show!!! It was spectacular as usual! I especially love the parachute jumpers and of course the BLUE ANGELS!!!  They were the finale, and performed for at least a half hour. The weather was absolutely GORGEOUS, almost if not 90 degress. Wow, it was worth getting my face sunburned(I should have known better it happened last year too)!!

My family and I are looking forward to next year’s airshow already!! Hopefully I can convince some of my family members from out of town to join us next time and we can do something big at the Robert Cardinal Park next door to the airport. As soon as it is confirmed they will be back, my plans WILL be in full effect!!

Nothing Special

Hey everyone, just wanted you to know that my son FINALLY got his laptop back yesterday!!(yah). I mean damn….It was there since March already. Like I said, he bought it in February from this beauty supply store nearby. He had it less than a month when he started encountering problems with it. So he took it back to them. Come to find out, it was the ‘motherboard’ blown. First they tried to get us to pay for repair. Man I almost ripped that guy a new armhole!!!

Every two to 3 weeks we’d stop by there and they’d give one reason after another why it wasn’t ready. So towards the end of April they tell us that they had gotten the wrong motherboard, so finally last week it was ready. I stop by there after work to pick it up and bring it to my son. Well ok, two keys were missing from the keyboard  which he said ‘whatever’ as opposed to them getting it back for another month to fix. But when he discovered they had taken out the usb jack, he was floored. I WAS FLOORED!!!! So, once again back it went!

So like I said, I went by there yesterday to get it because they called a day or two before to notify me it was ready, so come to find out my son had already gotten it. So now, my friends there is peace in the household…sigh!!!

And so I just found out last week that my job of almost four years is being moved to the Philippines(yea ok). So at this point I am looking hard and heavy!!! At least we were given ample notice(the end of July) a lot more than others have been given, thank God. So I have been feverishly looking for work on my downtime, and as a matter of fact, had an interview for another department at work in collections. Wish me luck!!!Well my friends, it’s the weekend, I’m going to enjoy this beautiful weather with my youngns’  this weekend, and I wish u all a great one as well, but let me leave u with this….

Life inflicts the same setbacks and tragedies on the optimist as on the pessimist, but the optimist weathers them better … The optimist bounces back from defeat, and, with his life somewhat poorer, he picks up and starts again. The pessimist gives up and falls into depression. Because of his resilience, the optimist achieves more at work, at school, and on the playing field. The optimist has better physical health and may even live longer. Americans want optimists to lead them. Even when things go well for the pessimist, he is haunted by forebodings of catastrophe. For pessimists, that is bad news. The good news is that pessimists can learn the skills of optimism and permanently improve the quality of their lives.

30 “Oh So Trues….”

Hello, my friends, I’m back. Work is kinda slow and my co-worker sent me this e-mail that I think you’d find amusing as it sure put a smile on my face…enjoy!! By the way, I added the pics myself for good measure, lol!!

1. I think part of a best friend’s job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.

3. I totally take back all those times I didn’t want to nap when I was younger.

4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.

5. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?

6. Was learning cursive really necessary?

7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on #5. I’m pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the Person died.

9. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t at least kind of tired.

10. Bad decisions make good stories.

11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren’t going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.

12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray? I don’t want to have to restart my collection…again.

13. I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page research paper that I swear I did not make any changes to.

14. “Do not machine wash or tumble dry” means I will never wash this – ever.

15. I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello?), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voice mail. What did you do after I didn’t answer? Drop the phone and run away?

16. I hate leaving my house confident and looking good and then not seeing anyone of importance the entire day. What a waste.

17. I keep some people’s phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.

18. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

19. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than Kay.

20. Sometimes, I’ll watch a movie that I watched when I was younger and suddenly realize I had no idea what the heck was going on when I first saw it.

21. I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring my groceries in.

22. The only time I look forward to a red light is when I’m trying to finish a text.

23. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

24. How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile because you still didn’t hear or understand a word they said?

25. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!

26. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.

27. Is it just me or do high school kids get dumber & dumber every year?

28. There’s no worse feeling than that millisecond you’re sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

29. Sometimes I’ll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still do not know what time it is.

30. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey – but I’d bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time!

That’s My Sign!!

Now that I’m getting used to this blogging thing, more ideas are popping in my head daily. Today I want to touch on my zodiac sign, Virgo. As you see, my user name is Melissavirgo because I feel a strong connection to being a Virgo. From the first time I ever even read up on my sign as a teen, I truly believed that it best described me.

Some of my interesting reading  in has enlightened me of my birth sign . Virgo is the sixth astrological sign in the zodiac.

Generally, Virgo is considered compatible with same element signs, Taurus, Capricorn, Scorpio and Virgo itself.[5] These signs share an earthy demeanor and are believed to relate with each other on that merit.

According to

Virgo Traits

Modest and shy
Meticulous and reliable
Practical and diligent
Intelligent and analytical

On the dark side….

Fussy and a worrier
Overcritical and harsh
Perfectionist and conservative

That’s me to a T! And it’s not like I changed myself to fit into the mold, trust! When I was a child I was chided for ‘keeping it real’ often. And now that I’m an adult, I try to  give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and take into consideration others’ feelings before speaking out. My biggest problem NOW more or less is not WHAT I say, but HOW I say it. Well, I’ll be the first to admit that I AM a work in PROGRESS!!!

The article goes on to say:

Virgo is the only zodiacal sign represented by a female. It is sometimes thought of as a potentially creative girl, delicately lovely; sometimes as a somewhat older woman, intelligent but rather pedantic and spinsterish. The latter impression is sometimes confirmed by the Virgoan preciseness, refinement, fastidious love of cleanliness, hygiene and good order, conventionality and aristocratic attitude of reserve. They are usually observant, shrewd, critically inclined, judicious, patient, practical supporters of the status quo, and tend toward conservatism in all departments of life. On the surface they are emotionally cold, and sometimes this goes deeper, for their habit of suppressing their natural kindness may in the end cause it to atrophy, with the result that they shrink from committing themselves to friendship, make few relationships, and those they do make they are careful to keep superficial.

Virgo is said to govern the hands, abdomen, intestines, spleen and central nervous system. Illnesses to which its natives are prone include catarrh, cold, coughs, pleurisies, pneumonia and nervous instabilities. Their natures make them inclined to worry and this makes them vulnerable to stomach and bowel troubles, including colic and ulcers. Male Virgoans may have trouble with their sexual organs. Both sexes are strongly interested in drugs and esoteric cuisine and as their delicate stomachs require them to be careful about their diet, it is essential that they treat their fascination with exotic food with extreme care.

Heaven knows yall, in the blink of an eye, when I think of certain things, my stomach knots up like crazy, then I must find the nearest rerstroom, asap(I know, tmi, lol!). I do know it’s some kid of anxiety thing I have going on. Also, when I’m stressed out, I lose my appetite completely. Wo is me!!!

  • Health foods
  • Lists
  • Hygiene
  • Order
  • Wholesomeness

    • Hazards to health
    • Anything sordid
    • Sloppy workers
    • Squalor
    • Being uncertain

The article goes on regarding negative issues with Virgoans:

Problem:  Finding yourself frequently alone and unable to keep friends for more than a few weeks.
Solution:  Try not to be argumentative over much and the constant criticism that Virgoans give to their companions are not endearing qualities to have. Try to live and let live, they will love you for it.

Problem:  People tend to avoid making close contact with you.
Solution:  Being too preoccupied with health and making it a continual topic of conversation. Try to keep your tips and suggestions about health and health products to yourself unless asked for them.

Problem:  Dissatisfied with the way your life is turning out; no excitement or change to speak of.
Solution:  You may be restricting yourself by reducing your life to a set of theories and pigeon-holes. Try to express the positive by first asking yourself, Who or what are you serving; are you devoted or are you enslaved. Answer those questions and then start a new path that includes your true worth.

Problem:  You may feel that your life and your climb to success is a steep hill that you may never be able to scale.
Solution:  Try expressing the positive traits of your finely tuned analytical reasoning, employing the light touch with employees and coworkers, while expressing genuine concern for all; You will find those mountains turning into hills that you run right over.

Wow, that’s interesting!! While I admit I am an anti-social person, it’s part of astrological makeup!! You know I’ve been living in Alabama and yet to have the honor of having a best friend as of yet? I guess I need to loosen up, huh?

    Here are some famous Virgoans:

    Adam Sandler (September 9)

    Amy Irving (September 10)

    Bill Murray (September 21)

    Billy Ray Cyrus (August 25)

    Cameron Diaz(August 30, 1972)

    Tattoo Design
If I were to get another tattoo in addition to the three I already have, I would like to get this one,  probably on my right shoulder. It is sweet and simple!
Ok, so it’s time to start closing the programs on my computer, it’s just about quitting time….that’s all for now, friends!
